Best card for Costco in 2026

Costco shopping has a quirk that most card guides gloss over: Costco U.S. warehouses only accept Visa. That rules out the Blue Cash Preferred (Amex), the Amex Gold (Amex), and the Discover it (Discover) immediately. You are left choosing between Visa options, and on that playing field, the Costco Anywhere Visa by Citi wins by a wide margin for anyone who buys gas at Costco.

Here is how the math works for a typical Gold Star household.

The example basket

  • Costco grocery and household spending: $200/week ($10,400/yr)
  • Costco gas: $180/month ($2,160/yr)

On the Costco Anywhere Visa: gas at Costco earns 5% ($108 on $2,160, under the $7,000/yr combined gas cap). All Costco warehouse and Costco.com purchases earn 2% ($208 on $10,400). Total: $316 per year, issued as an annual reward certificate.

There is no card annual fee -- but you need a paid Costco membership. Gold Star is $65/yr and Executive is $130/yr (check current pricing at costco.com). The Executive membership pays 2% back on most Costco purchases as a separate benefit (up to $1,000/yr), so heavy Costco shoppers often find Executive more than pays for itself on its own.

Chase Freedom Unlimited (Visa)1.5% everywhere1.5% everywhere$188
Flat 2% Visa (e.g. Wells Fargo Active Cash)2% everywhere2% everywhere$251

The flat 2% Visa is actually competitive on the warehouse spend (both earn 2%), but the Costco Anywhere Visa pulls ahead on gas with its 5% rate at Costco. If you don't buy gas at Costco, the math tightens considerably, since elsewhere the card earns 4% on gas and EV charging (still capped at $7,000/yr combined).

How the card earns everywhere else

The Costco Anywhere Visa is not just a Costco card. Its full earning structure:

  • 5% on gas at Costco, and 4% on eligible gas and EV charging elsewhere (combined $7,000/yr cap, then 1%)
  • 3% on restaurants and eligible travel purchases
  • 2% on all Costco and Costco.com purchases
  • 1% on everything else

For a household that also eats out regularly and takes occasional trips, the 3% dining and travel rate adds meaningful value. At $300/mo of restaurant spending ($3,600/yr), that's another $108/yr. The card starts to look like a solid everyday Visa, not just a warehouse card.

Who should get the Costco Anywhere Visa

It is the right pick if you are already a Costco member (the membership fee is a sunk cost for you) and you buy gas at Costco or nearby Citi-partner stations. The gas rate alone often justifies keeping the card in your wallet even if you could earn more on grocery spend with a different card.

It is not the right pick if you are not a Costco member and would join solely for the card. At $65/yr minimum for Gold Star, you need to be confident you will recover that through shopping savings and card rewards combined. For someone who shops at Costco occasionally, a flat 2% Visa with no membership requirement earns nearly as much at the warehouse without the annual commitment.

The Amex problem

The Blue Cash Preferred earns 6% on U.S. supermarkets, which is excellent -- but Costco warehouses do not code as supermarkets, and Amex is not accepted at the register anyway. This trips up a lot of people who optimize their grocery card and then discover it is useless at Costco. If Costco is a significant part of your monthly shopping, the Costco Anywhere Visa is not optional -- it is the only card that earns at all on that spend.

Costco.com is a different story: any Visa works there, so a Chase Freedom Unlimited or flat 2% card earns its normal rate on online Costco orders. The warehouse restriction is physical locations only.
